Engel Karton + Papier GmbH research methods to produce seagrass paper

The state of Schleswig-Holstein has provided Engel Karton + Papier GmbH with fundings for a project to research how paper can be produced from seagrass. This research project has the potential to both reduce the burden on the environment and promote the sustainable use of raw materials.

Every year, a large amount of seagrass washes up on the beaches of the German Baltic Sea coast. These biological deposits are removed by cleaning personnel and normally end up as rubbish. Now the state government of Schleswig-Holstein has decided to put this waste product to good use.

Engel Karton + Papier GmbH is to develop a process in which industrially cleaned seaweed is mixed with wastepaper to produce new paper. This innovative method could not only reduce the amount of waste, but also opens a new, environmentally friendly source of raw materials.

Engel Karton + Papier GmbH expressed its gratitude to the state government of Schleswig-Holstein for its trust. ‘We are very grateful for the opportunity to work on this forward-looking project,’ said a spokesperson for the company. ‘This project gives us the opportunity to demonstrate our expertise in the field of sustainable paper production and make a valuable contribution to environmental protection.’

With this project, Schleswig-Holstein could play a pioneering role in the sustainable use of natural resources and set an example for other regions and countries. Engel Karton + Papier GmbH is proud to be part of this environmentally friendly initiative and looks forward to working with the state government and other partners.
